Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT Review

Bottom Line

The Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT is a highly affordable coffee pot with the brewing capabilities of a high end one. Owners say they love the strong, hot cup of coffee it produces. It's loaded with features; however, as plenty of owners point out, that much technology means there are lots of fiddly things that can just stop working -- and they sometimes do. For the price, many say it's worth buying a new one every few months. We read some recent complaints about a strong plastic taste and smell, but most don't note that as an issue.

Breaking it down

Falls short of the optimal temperature. In professional testing, the Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT doesn't reach the industry-recommended guidelines of 195 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal brewing performance. At, testers are puzzled at this coffee makers enduring popularity, saying that it, "It consistently made the worst cup of coffee." Thousands of happy owners don't care about the experts' opinions, however, and it's one of the most popular coffee pots we saw on user review sites. The vast majority of users say it makes a more than decent cup of coffee, and does so quickly and with a minimum of fuss. However, we read a few complaints about a plastic taste or smell that was difficult to get rid of.

Lots of features for the price. The Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT is absolutely loaded with features, including, delay brew; a freshness timer; brew strength selector; brew pause; and a two-hour automatic shutoff. Unfortunately, all of those electronics result in a LOT of durability complaints -- for example, some report that the timer quit working, the clock fizzled out, or the delay brew wouldn't kick in. When it does last, though, as it does for many years for many people, this is as good a deal as you're going to get in a coffee maker.

Ease of use

Super simple, if you can see the clock. The Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT is very easy to use, both experts and owners say, with intuitive, programmable controls that work very much like those on all coffee makers. The one big problem owners have is that the display is not backlit. This makes it useless as a clock -- you can't see it -- and makes it difficult to see and set the timer functions. Reviewers rave about the brew-strength setting, though, saying that, unlike other coffee pots they have owned, you can really tell the difference in the coffee taste between settings on this machine. It also pours cleanly, both from the pot to the reservoir, and from the pot into a cup. We see a lot of complaints about drips, even on very expensive coffee makers, but not on this one.

Classic styling. In spite of its low-rent price, the Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT is quite an attractive coffee maker, say owners. They like its square, classic style that they say fits in with any kitchen dŽcor. It's widely available in black and stainless steel, and we found it in red at Be sure to measure the area where you want to keep this coffee pot. A number of reviewers point out that at 13 inches high -- 20 when the top is open -- it's a fairly tall coffee maker, so it's probably only suitable for open spaces or tall cabinets. It has a 12-cup capacity but can also make smaller batches, and is compatible with the optional 8-cup Mr. Coffee DRD95 Thermal Carafe (Est. $20).
