If you are a coffee connoisseur, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT 741 is one of the few auto-drip coffee makers that brews at the ideal temperature (200 degrees Fahrenheit). This Dutch-built machine produces great-tasting coffee, and the thermal carafe keeps it hot for a couple of hours or longer. It has a pause function, but few other programmable features, which some reviewers miss. It also requires more hands on attention to prepare coffee, but coffee buffs say that's what makes the resulting brew so delicious.
Perfect brew times and temperatures translate into great-tasting coffee. Professional reviewers give the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT 741 excellent scores for brew performance. The Moccamaster is technically an automatic drip coffee machine, but, rather than a single drip, it has a spray-type technology that saturates the grounds for the perfect length of time to extract the maximum amount of flavor. It also brews at the temperature needed (between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit) to produce the richest flavor. Thanks to its thermal carafe, the Technivorm keeps coffee hot for hours -- Technivorm claims two hours, but a few owners said their coffee was still hot after four. Many people appreciate that it does not continue to "cook" after the coffee is brewed as coffee in glass carafes on hot plates tend to do. It is one of the few automatic drip coffee makers to be certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America.
Pause brew lets you sneak a cup, but programming options are missing. The Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT 741 requires a bit more fussing to prepare coffee for brewing than some coffee makers, but many say that exacting process is one of the things that makes the results so good. In spite of that, this is a very basic coffee maker. It has a pause brew feature to sneak a cup before the pot is fully brewed, but is missing such common niceties as an automatic shut-off and a delay timer. On the plus side, reviewers point out, the Technivorm Moccamaster is fast. Simply turn the coffee maker on and you'll have a full batch (10 cups) of perfectly brewed coffee in 6 minutes. Water flow can be controlled with a three-position switch located on the side of the filter basket, allowing true aficionados to experiment with a finer or coarser grind to perfect flavors. Reviewers say it's easy to dissemble and clean, but it's not dishwasher safe. In professional tests, the model earns good scores for convenience and carafe handling, but we found a few complaints that pouring from the carafe can cause some drips.
Sleek, attractive silver styling. The Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT 741's is praised by owners for being a sleek coffee maker with a high-tech appearance that stays new-looking even after a year or more of use. The carafe has a polished silver finish and, in spite of the occasional poor review for not having a spout, quite a few reviewers actually say that spout-less appearance is kind of cool. However, this is a fairly large coffee maker -- it will take up plenty of real estate on your counter and, at 15.25 inches tall, you need to be sure it will fit under your counters. The Moccamaster is hand assembled in the Netherlands and comes with a five-year warranty.
