Connoisseur's coffee maker
- Brews at optimal 200 degrees
- Great-tasting coffee
- Has thermal carafe
- Has pause function
- Expensive
- Odd looking
- Bulky
- 10-cup capacity
If you are a coffee connoisseur, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT741 is one of the few auto-drip coffee makers certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America as brewing at the optimal temperature (200 degrees Fahrenheit). It differs from the Technivorm Moccamaster KBG741 (*Est. $245) in that it has a thermal carafe instead of glass, and at this writing it's much easier to find in the United States than its sibling. Otherwise, both Dutch-built coffee machines brew great-tasting coffee 10 cups at a time and have a pause function but few other features. Not everyone likes the looks -- some users say the Technivorm coffee makers would look at home in a science lab -- and not everyone agrees it's worth the price.
We found the best information at Cook's Illustrated, which tests the the Technivorm KBT741 in an eight-product roundup, but a subscription is required to see it. Blogger Al Ruscelli is a photographer by trade, but does a good job comparing the Technivorm KBT741 against the Newco OSC-8. We also found a good message-board discussion on AmericasTestKitchen.com, and a review by vendor Tom Owen.

2. Ruscelli.com
Texas photographer and coffee enthusiast Al Ruscelli compares the plusses and minuses of the Newco OCS-8 and the Technivorm KBT741. He says the Newco is cheaper, beeps when the brewing is done and keeps coffee slightly hotter. He says the KBT741 is built better, but it's too new to test durability. He says both make great coffee.

In this message board thread for Cook's Illustrated readers, some wonder if the Technivorm KBT741 looks too much like a laboratory fixture for a home kitchen and whether it's worth the price. There's some disagreement on the latter.
