Best ground coffee
- Smooth, classic taste and texture
- Inexpensive
- Some batches are bitter
- Some find it to be thin
Reviewers usually ignore or dismiss pre-ground coffees, giving them little more attention than instant coffees. Not all reviews of Dunkin' Donuts Original Blend coffee are about the ground version; some prefer to grind their own. But Dunkin' Donuts pre-ground 100% Arabica coffee gets good scores from coffee drinkers for its smooth, "classic" taste and in blind taste tests usually outperforms most supermarket brands. Detractors say it's thin, off-tasting and bitter. If you want to buy whole beans, the reviews say Eight O'Clock Coffee 100% Colombian (*est. $5 for a 12-ounce bag) is the best value. If you prefer a dark roast, Millstone Colombian Supremo (*est. $7.50 for an 11-ounce bag) is tops in reviews.
We found the best review at Cook's Illustrated, where Dunkin' Donuts Original Blend finishes fourth out of four light roasts, but this was the grind-it-yourself variety and tasters didn't like it. Consumer Reports includes Dunkin' Donuts Classic in its ratings. We also found helpful reviews from CoffeeReview.com and television's Today Show.

1. Cook's Illustrated MagazineDetails/Subscribe
Cook's Illustrated had 25 staffers taste eight whole-bean supermarket coffees brewed at regular strength and also sent the coffees to a lab for testing (including a measurement of immature beans, "quakers" that get past the sorter and spoil a brew). Coffees were sampled with and without milk to determine whether taste preferences changed.

Review: Coffee: In Search of Great Grounds, Editors of Consumer Reports, Dec. 2004
Kenneth Davids reviews coffees continually; he prefaces this somewhat dated review by saying the quality of Dunkin' Donuts' basic coffee has slipped since he reviewed it in 2002. In this review he says "not a single cup appeared on the table without some taint or other."
