Eight O'Clock Coffee 100% Colombian

Best supermarket coffee

Pros
  • Good value
  • Smooth, rich flavor
Cons
  • May be too mild for some

Coffee reviews can be as elitist as wine reports, but the prosaic Eight O'Clock Coffee 100% Colombian fares well in most blind taste tests. In one major test, it beats out pricier roasts from Starbucks, Gloria Jean's Coffee and Peet's Coffee, in addition to other affordable supermarket brands like Folgers and Maxwell House. Tasters say the flavor of Eight O'Clock's 100% Colombian is smooth and rich with a well-balanced acidity. While most tasters appreciate this medium roast, which is made from 100 percent arabica beans, some find the flavor a bit too mild. The 100% Colombian is available in ground or whole-bean varieties. If you prefer a darker roast, we also found good reviews for Peet's Coffee Major Dickason's Blend (*Est. $14 for 16 oz.). It's more expensive, but tasters say it's an incredibly rich, full-bodied coffee.

The best review of Eight O'Clock Coffee 100% Colombian comes from ConsumerReports.org, which tests 19 ground coffees and rates each one on its various flavor attributes. Three caffeinated coffees are recommended. Kenneth Davids at CoffeeReview.com has a detailed review from a coffee connoisseur's perspective, and we found some user reviews at RateItAll.com and Amazon.com.
