Great Value 100% Columbian Decaf (Wal-Mart)

Supermarket decaf coffee
- Low price
- Good taste among inexpensive brands
- Most reviewers dislike decafs in general
Not many reviewers focus on decaffeinated coffees. Most say that the process to remove caffeine also hurts the flavor, and people who are serious about coffee tend to treat decafs dismissively. Consumer Reports is one of the few reviewers that include decaffeinated coffees in their taste tests - it rates 17 decafs. We found a smattering of individual consumer reviews that corroborate data from Consumer Reports. Price is a major attraction, and in Wal-Mart's coffees in general are said to taste good compared with low-cost supermarket brands.
By far the best review is at Consumer Reports, but you'll need to subscribe in order to read it. Although there are no essays on the individual products, editors rate 17 decafs varieties. CoffeeReview.com does not review Wal-Mart's decaf coffee, but does give a good score and complimentary comments to a regular Wal-Mart coffee, Great Value 100% Arabica. There's no customer-review source that offers enough feedback for a consensus on decaf coffee. A message-board question posed on Chowhound.com about best decafs yielded the predictable responses of "there aren't any."

Kenneth Davids reviews coffees in blind taste tests. His comments are critical and balanced. Davids doesn't review Great Value 100% Columbian Decaf but calls the non-decaf Great Value 100% Arabica "a decent, low-key, agreeable coffee at a startlingly low price."
