by Editors of Cook's Illustrated magazine
Our AssessmentCook's Illustrated magazine editors test seven pre-ground, decaf coffees, all of which are widely available at supermarkets across the country. Supermarket Whole Bean Coffee
by Editors of Cook's Illustrated magazine
Our AssessmentTwenty-five kitchen staffers taste eight different samples of whole-bean supermarket coffees brewed at regular strength. Nearly two-thirds of the kitchen staffers normally drink coffee with milk, so the test is conducted again with warm milk. Overall, three coffees are highly recommended and two are recommended with reservations. We give this review a slightly lower rating because it hasn't been updated in several years.

by Kenneth Davids
Our AssessmentKenneth Davids, the editor of CoffeeReview.com, writes some of the most detailed coffee reviews on the web, even if he does focus mainly on specialty roasters. Davids has an extensive database of coffee reviews, and while this site focuses on just one reviewer's opinion, the ratings are balanced and detailed. You can search by the name of a specific coffee or browse reviews for the highest-rated brews.

Our AssessmentThe staff of Delicious Living magazine tests nine organic and Fair Trade coffees, but their testing methodology is not as well explained as those sources we rank higher. The eleven coffees that didn't make the cut are not listed.

A Review of Six Central American Coffees
by Tom Philpot
Our AssessmentTom Philpot reviews six brands of Central American coffee that are organic and shade-grown. With the help of coffee experts, Philpot conducts a blind tasting of the six brands of coffee, and his testing process is nicely detailed. Each taster rates the coffees on a 10-point scale, and the scores are combined for the final tally. Roasts from Counter Culture and Stumptown earn the highest ratings. Most of the brands receive relatively high ratings, except for Trader Joe's Central American blend, which Philpot labels a "disaster."

Taste Test: Coffee
by Editors of Food & Wine magazine
Our AssessmentFood & Wine editors present a list of favorite coffee varieties, though it's not clear how many were tested or how many taste testers were involved. Only boutique coffee blends are listed and none of these are available nationally in supermarkets. The only supermarket coffee noted is Starbucks, which editors say is their "hands-down favorite." But it's not clear if others were considered.

Each coffee is rated on aroma, flavor, lack of bitterness and overall experience. What's New: Putting Dunkin' Donuts Coffee to the Test
by Stacy Finz
Our AssessmentThe San Francisco Chronicle evaluates five whole-bean medium roasts in an informal blind taste test. While the focus of the article is on Dunkin' Donuts medium-roast coffee, that is actually the brand liked least by reviewers here. Most of the testers at this newspaper prefer Peet's or Tully's store-bought coffee, but no ratings or analysis are shared about the winners.

A Lo-Caf Taste Test
by Juliet Chung
Our AssessmentWriters at The Wall Street Journal test three low-caffeine brands of coffee with the help of four coffee experts. by Liza Featherstone
Our AssessmentThe older article reveals the results of a taste test of Fair Trade-certified coffees judged by four panelists of differing backgrounds. The blind taste test was conducted by brewing each coffee in a French press for four minutes and then consuming it black. Judges were asked to rate each coffee based on its body, acidity and balance, although none of the coffees judged are available in supermarkets.

by Rivers Janssen
Our AssessmentKickapoo Coffee Roasters wins the Micro-Roaster of the Year award from Roast Magazine, a publication focused on the coffee-roasting industry. However, the article focuses more on Kickapoo's business practices and doesn't review the roaster's coffee. It's not clear how many other coffee roasters were considered for the award. Equator Estate Coffee and Tea wins the Macro-Roaster of the Year award.

Coffee
by Contributors to RateItAll.com
Our AssessmentRateItAll.com has a very good selection of owner-written coffee reviews. Many of the major coffee brands are represented, and some attract hundreds of individual ratings. For many of the reviews, however, the ratings apply to the general coffee brand (i.e., Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks, etc.) instead of individual coffee roasts. Still, it's a good indication of overall consumer satisfaction with major coffee brands.

by Erica Cerula
Our AssessmentGood Magazine, a nonprofit publication, lists the top 10 small-batch coffee companies in this round-up article. Each brand receives a critic's pick, listing their favorite blend, but there's little information on why these 10 coffee brands were selected over others.

How to Perk Up Your Morning Cup of Coffee
by Phil Lempert
Our AssessmentPhil Lempert, food editor for NBC's "Today" show, gives a short but interesting overview of types of coffee in this older article, along with the results of personal taste tests and preferences. The most important advice here is to avoid robusta beans, which are of lesser quality than arabica beans. Lempert recommends several brands of coffee, but he doesn't focus on specific roasts and it's not clear if he's discussing supermarket coffee or brewed coffee from national chains.

Coffee
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our AssessmentAmazon.com is not the best source of coffee reviews. Not all supermarket brands are sold at Amazon.com, and some get only a handful of reviews. Most of the coffees that attract a good number of reviews are K-cups, single-serving coffee pods designed for Keurig coffee makers.
