Kona Africabike

Budget single-speed commuter bike, but heavy

pros
  • Good value
  • Loaded with accessories
  • Charity program
cons
  • Very heavy frame
  • Single speed limits it to flat terrain

In general, reviewers love the Kona AfricaBike, a single-speed comfort bike that is decked out with practically all the accessories you'll want for your commute. The step-through steel frame is accessorized with a basket, chain cover, lock, kickstand, bell, rear rack and fenders. Although the single-speed drivetrain is relatively low-maintenance, reviewers say it limits the Kona AfricaBike to relatively flat commutes. The Kona AfricaBike is quite heavy (about 41 pounds), but reviewers say the bike offers a sturdy, comfortable ride. It also helps you do something for charity -- for every two Kona AfricaBikes sold, one bike is donated to healthcare workers in Africa. If you would prefer to have a few more gearing options, there is a three-speed option in the Kona AfricaBike Three (MSRP: $450). The Jamis Commuter 1 (MSRP: $365) is another well-reviewed option that has multiple gears, although you'll have to add your own commuting accessories.

There are several decent reviews of the Kona AfricaBike, including on the British site Road.cc. The review is detailed and balanced, and it's based on real-world testing -- although Road.cc reviews the three-speed version. The Kona AfricaBike was also featured on an episode of ABC's "Good Morning America," where Bicycling editor Loren Mooney describes its attributes and features. It's not a critical review, but it gives you an in-depth look at the bike. The Kona AfricaBike is also reviewed in a recent The Seattle Times article.

2. Road.cc

Dave Atkinson calls the Kona AfricaBike Three (the three-speed version) a "classic and a bargain." He says it provides a sturdy, upright ride that is a good choice for commuting. Although the rear rack can't accommodate standard panniers, Atkinson says it's stable enough for some pretty heavy loads.
