Exaco Earthmaker

Large outdoor compost bin

Pros
  • Large capacity
  • Easy to assemble
  • Good odor control
Cons
  • Difficult to turn when full
  • Iffy moisture retention
  • Not recommended for use in direct sunlight

Reviewers posting to retail websites say the Exacto Earthmaker is a large-capacity compost bin that is easy to assemble and controls odors well, although some users say it does not produce compost quickly enough. Nevertheless, this unit is the best rated among stationary bins. The Earthmaker performed well in a head-to-head "compost-off" conducted by Gaiam.com, although testers point out that the unit does not retain water well, which can slow compost production. The-Organic-Gardener.com cites a number of benefits to the Earthmaker, which earn it a recommendation from this website.

As a stationary compost bin, the Earthmaker is for outdoor use only. If you are looking for an indoor unit to collect and/or process kitchen scraps, reviewers recommend the Triformis Can-O-Worms (*Est. $120), a digester-style composter with a spigot at the bottom for collecting liquid compost. If you need a compost pail to store scraps before taking them outdoors to compost, the KC1000 Kitchen Compost Pail (*Est. $20), which also goes by the name Compost Bucket on Gaiam.com, garners many positive reviews.

1. Gaiam.com

The Earthmaker was one of two composters nominated to take part in a six-week comparison of composting performance. The Earthmaker did a better job controlling odor than its competitor, the Bio-Orb, but it also produced a drier mixture that did not break down as quickly. Testers concluded that the Earthmaker was a good choice for wet climates and for composting moist material such as food scraps.

This gardening-tips website is run by Michael Scott, an experienced home gardener. Scott calls the Earthmaker's three-chambered design an "advantage," because it separates wastes from finished compost, speeds decomposition and admits worms to the cooler, lower section of the bin.
