Gaming Mice

Mice for gaming offer more precision, control

A gaming mouse has higher resolution than other types of mice, generally above 1,000 dpi. This type of computer mouse gets a lot of attention in reviews, but experts also say that 800 dpi and higher is overkill for basic office applications and web surfing. However, if you are a gamer or graphics professional who needs precise pointer control, you'll appreciate a gaming mouse. Most have adjustable sensitivity, so you can dial down the settings when you're using the mouse on more mundane tasks.

Microsoft's SideWinder X8 (*Est. $90) takes the crown this year in several reviews of mice designed for gamers. The SideWinder X8 offers 4,000-dpi resolution and full-speed 500 Hz USB reporting for better response time. It also features Microsoft's BlueTrack system, technology that ensures the mouse will work well on nearly any surface, and is capable of processing 13,000 images per second. It has attractive black styling with red lighting, and comes with DPI buttons that you can use to adjust the performance during games. Seven of the SideWinder X8's 12 buttons are customizable, and the scroll wheel features a tilt design.

ExtremeTech.com points out that the X8 is the third SideWinder mouse to come out in two years and, "the X8 is the crescendo of them. It's the best Microsoft gaming mouse on the market today -- and worthy of it." ExtremeTech also calls it the fastest and most accurate mouse on the market, although they hedge by saying it may not be for everyone due to its shape.

Two other gaming mice score high in recent tests. The Razer Mamba (*Est. $130) is a high-end mouse that works in either wired or wireless modes. It features a 5,600-dpi laser sensor and a one millisecond response time. It also includes seven programmable buttons. Meanwhile, the NZXT Avatar (*Est. $60) is a lower-priced wired option for gamers. It includes gaming-friendly features like a 2,600-dpi resolution, the ability to work right-handed or left-handed and nine customizable buttons. Users can adjust the dpi on the fly and call up macros for complex game commands. Some reviewers complain about the Avatar's slightly uncomfortable design, while others think $60 is a high price to pay for a wired mouse.
