The BlueTrack-enabled Microsoft SideWinder X8 is a killer mouse for gamers due to its high 4,000 dpi sensitivity and a full-speed, 500 Hz USB reporting rate, which promises speedy response times. BlueTrack is Microsoft's proprietary laser tracking system; with a processing rate of 13,000 images per second, it helps the mouse work properly on almost any surface. The SideWinder X8 also features buttons to let you adjust performance in the heat of battle. With its red lighting and dramatic black design, the SideWinder X8 even looks the part. That said, the SideWinder X8 is a little extreme for day-to-day computing and is probably too much mouse for the average nongamer. A better choice for gamers is the Logitech Wireless Gaming Mouse G700 (*Est. $70), our Best Reviewed pick.

CNET and ExtremeTech.com both praise the SideWinder X8 in lengthy, detailed reviews. Gizmodo.com pits the X8 against the Razer Mamba in a gaming mouse head-to-head feature, while other reviews generally praise the SideWinder X8's performance and accuracy. Amazon.com offers a good number of user reviews.

Our Sources

1. CNET

CNET awards the SideWinder X8 4 stars, saying that its hybrid wired and wireless design eliminates downtime between charges. Editor Peter Brown also likes the BlueTrack sensor and high 4,000-dpi accuracy, but he marks the mouse down for its slippery scroll wheel and a signal drop-off in high sensitivity wireless mode.

2. CrunchGear.com

Devin Coldewey's review on CrunchGear.com comes in two parts since he experienced tracking trouble with the first SideWinder X8. Overall, he says the mouse is "worth a try," but he has misgivings about buggy drivers and the fact that the mouse doesn't track well on cloth mouse pads.

3. ExtremeTech.com

ExtremeTech.com awards the SideWinder X8 4 stars, calling it the best Microsoft mouse available for its fast, accurate sensor. Reviewer Jeremy Atkinson also likes the dpi buttons and macro options, but he pans the high price, large size and some wireless interference issues when using the scroll wheel.

4. DigitalTrends.com

Michael Brown's well-illustrated review rates the SideWinder X8 in two categories: design and programmability. Although not the ultimate gaming mouse, he says, the SideWinder is a very good example of its breed. The X8's customizable buttons, precision and battery life are pluses, but a flawed scroll wheel keeps the SideWinder X8 from scoring higher.

5. MaximumCPU.net

Reviewer Bill Hicks says that overall, the SideWinder X8 is pleasant to use and makes a solid gaming mouse. But the reviewer says he doesn't think it would be the best choice for extended desktop use because the mouse's sculpted lines aren't comfortable.

6. Gizmodo.com

Gizmodo.com pits the Razer Mamba against the SideWinder X8. Reviewer Matt Buchanan says the Razer felt great and exhibited perfect response time -- but at too high a price and with poor battery life. Buchanan cites the SideWinder X8's improved ergonomics and long battery life, but he finds its response time falls just shy of the Razer Mamba. The reviewer also doesn't like the large hump in the center of the X8.

7. Amazon.com

Most of the 80 reviewers at Amazon like the SideWinder X8, saying that it's comfortable, matches the styling of Microsoft's keyboards and offers many unique features. A few reviewers take issue with the SideWinder X8's slippery buttons and size, and some experience tracking issues.
