The NZXT Avatar is a wired mouse that may appeal to budget-minded gamers. It's not as full-featured as the Microsoft SideWinder X8, but reviewers say the Avatar holds its own with a 2,600 dpi, an ambidextrous design (for right- or left-handed use) and nine customizable buttons. Like the SideWinder X8, Avatar owners can adjust dpi performance on the fly, as well as program macros for multi-click sequences in certain games. Not everyone is taken with the NZXT Avatar. In particular, ExtremeTech.com pans the Avatar's ergonomic miscues and its lofty price considering the lack of wireless capability. In fact, ergonomic issues tended to be a running theme for the NZXT Avatar. While it's smaller and lighter than some of the larger gaming mice, that very same thin shape made it too easy for some reviewers to trigger buttons accidentally.

In addition to ExtremeTech.com's thorough review, we found more positive evaluations at TestFreaks.com, HardwareSecrets.com and Gizmodo.com. There are also a good number of user reviews at Newegg.com.

1. ExtremeTech.com

While most reviews of the NZXT Avatar are quite positive, Jeremy Atkinson offers interesting counterpoint in his review. ExtremeTech.com awards the Avatar 3 stars; Atkinson writes that he appreciates the NZXT's unique design, with its thin and narrow shape, as well as its various gaming-oriented features. But he also notes the mouse is expensive considering it's not wireless, and that the unique shape also comes with ergonomic compromises.

2. TestFreaks.com

TestFreaks.com editor Kristofer Brozio is very impressed with the Avatar, rating it 9 out of 10 overall, and 10 out of 10 for performance. Brozio cites the Avatar's "excellent" tracking, ambidextrous design, programmability and price. The only downsides mentioned are the small size and the poor placement of certain buttons that makes it easy to press them accidentally.

3. Hardware Secrets.com

Andre Gordirro pens a lengthy review of the Avatar, saying that its elegant design, comfortable grip, and ambidextrous setup make it an excellent choice for gamers. On the downside, the lack of weight customization, poor dpi button placement, and lightweight design are drawbacks.

4. Gizmodo.com

This very short review barely goes into any detail, but reviewer Matt Buchanan is unimpressed with the Avatar. He finds it "far too easy" to hit the thumb buttons, and as a result, the mouse cramps his hand while trying to avoid them. He cites the customization software and overall performance as plusses.

5. NewEgg.com

Over 30 people review the NZXT Avatar at Newegg.com, awarding it an average score of 4 out of 5. Most reviewers praise the mouse's excellent gaming performance and response. A few owners run into driver issues, and several others find it very easy to accidentally double-click the left mouse button.
