Where to Buy

If you want good basic PC speakers without any extras, the Altec Lansing VS2421 receives the best reviews in its budget price class. At reasonable volumes, reviewers say these speakers' frequency response of 35 Hz to 20 KHz allows for a full sound, and at 28 watts, the Altec Lansing VS2421 offers surprisingly robust bass. These computer speakers include a hard-wired remote that allows you to control the volume and treble (bass controls are located on the rear of the subwoofer); the remote also includes a microphone, mute button and an auxiliary input for your MP3 or CD player. We read several complaints that the speakers get interference from cell phones, however. And bear in mind that the sound from these budget speakers can't compete with more-expensive speakers.

The Altec Lansing VS2421 PC speaker system is reviewed by two professional sources -- TechTree.com and HardwareTechReview.com -- and gets a fair amount of owner feedback at Amazon.com.
