The retractable-hardtop Lexus SC 430 was first introduced in 2002, and reviewers say it's a secure and quiet coupe that transforms into a solid-feeling, open-air convertible in less than 30 seconds. Build quality is said to be excellent on the SC 430, which exudes an air of luxury, reviewers say. Lexus dealers' reputation for top customer satisfaction is another plus. Overall, reviews indicate that the Lexus SC 430 is a well-built, comfortable cruiser. Some critics, however, say its heyday is over, its styling has become tired, and there are better alternatives.
Despite rear-wheel drive and a 288-horsepower V-8 on the Lexus SC 430, performance is unimpressive, auto writers report. They say the handling is too soft and the ride is too firm, especially with the optional run-flat tires that allow for an increase in trunk volume to 9.4 cubic feet with the top up. With standard tires and a spare, the trunk holds only 8.8 cubic feet, a figure that is significantly reduced when the top is lowered. The rear seat of the Lexus SC 430 is virtually useless for passengers but adds cargo space. Reviewers note the twin-turbo BMW 335i convertible (*est. $49,500) also has a retractable hardtop, but is less expensive while offering luxury, more sport and a usable backseat.
