The 2011 BMW 3 Series Convertible (Base MSRP: $45,000 to $58,200) continues to best the competition in nearly every way, even without a major redesign. A sporty driving experience that still maintains impressive levels of ride comfort, along with a luxurious, driver-focused interior make the 3 Series a perennial recommended pick among premium convertibles. The 2011 3 Series convertible receives some powertrain changes (detailed below) but is otherwise basically the same as the 2009 car. For a detailed look at this model, check out our full report on the 2009 BMW 3 Series (*Est. $44,550 to $50,700).

For 2011, a new single twin-scroll turbocharger replaces the previous twin-turbo setup in the 2010 335i, giving the 2011 model better efficiency while delivering identical power numbers. Furthermore, the 335is, a new trim line, comes equipped with a more powerful twin-turbo engine (320 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque). Other features specific to the new 335is trim include a sportier suspension, a special body kit, sportier seats and steering wheel, and unique wheels.

Fuel economy for the base BMW 328i convertible remains unchanged at 18 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic transmission, and one mpg less for city, highway and combined when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission.

Six-speed automatic and manual transmission options for the 335i's new single-turbo inline-six deliver a slightly more efficient 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

The powerful new 335is convertible, with its twin-turbocharged inline-six, delivers 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined rating with the six-speed manual, while the automatic version is slightly less efficient at 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

All BMW 3 Series convertibles include a full complement of safety features like front and side airbags, antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2010 model year its highest rating in frontal-offset crash tests, but it hands down "Marginal" and "Poor" ratings on the BMW for occupant protection in side and rear impacts.
