The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a nonprofit organization funded by the insurance industry that tests vehicles and assigns safety ratings in an attempt to cut down on the number of annual losses due to car crashes. Note, however, that the organization doesn't test convertibles as often as it does other body styles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website offers the federal government's safety information, including results from frontal, side and rollover crash tests, summaries of vehicles' safety equipment and articles on safety topics. It is also possible to search for safety recalls on specific car models.
