Bosch PGL985UC

Pros
  • Continuous grates
  • Large central burner
  • Good value
  • Safety features
Cons
  • Poor simmering performance
  • Knobs get hot during use

The mid-price 36-inch Bosch PGL985UC is a five-burner gas cooktop that receives excellent reviews from several owners posting to online retailers, along with a recommendation from ConsumerGuide.com. It has continuous cast-iron grates and five burners, including a high-powered, 15,500-BTU power burner. Owners compliment its safety features, including a mechanism that shuts off the gas if the flame goes out and child-resistant knobs. However, this cooktop, which performs excellently at high temperatures, has more trouble with low-heat cooking such as simmering. Several owners say it's hard to achieve a simmer, even on its small burners. If you can afford to spend a bit more, the top-rated GE Profile JGP975WEKWW (*Est. $1,150) is worth a look.

ConsumerReports.org provides the most reliable review for the Bosch PGL985UC. We also found a glowing recommendation for this cooktop at ConsumerGuide.com (though there's no indication that it has been tested) and several owner reviews at AJMadison.com, Amazon.com and Epinions.com.
