The 36-inch GE JGP975WEKWW is an excellent gas cooktop, earning high ratings from expert reviewers and owners. GE cooktops in general have a good repair record, and the GE JGP975WEKWW has useful high-end features like continuous cast-iron grates for easy transfer of heavy pots between burners. The top is made of porcelain enamel, a more durable material than the painted metal found in budget cooktops like the GE JGP637WEJWW (*Est. $800). If you're on a budget or these features aren't important to you, reviewers say the GE JGP637WEJWW is an excellent value that performs almost as well as more expensive gas cooktops.
ConsumerReports.org includes a separate section on gas cooktops in its latest report. The GE JGP975WEKWW and 12 others are tested for effectiveness at high and low heat and then ranked in order of how well they perform. J.D. Power and Associates uses a survey of 15,000 consumers to assess overall satisfaction with a variety of home appliances including cooktops. Individual models aren't discussed, although GE is included in the brand ratings. Pronto.com is a retail site that includes a cooktop buyer's guide. The GE JGP975 is chosen as the Pronto Pick, but the accompanying write-up is little more than a list of features.
