Bottom line

If price is an object, you will be hard pressed to find a modern smoothtop that delivers better performance than the 30-inch Whirlpool W5CE3024XB at anywhere near this electric cooktop's price. You do sacrifice a bit on the features front -- no touchpad controls or expanding elements here. The design is humdrum, too, but at least it shouldn't clash with the rest of an existing kitchen. But when it comes to a cooktop's number one task -- cooking food -- performance leaves experts and owners smiling. The Whirlpool W5CE3024XB comes in black, but is also available in white as the W5CE3024XW (Est. $550) or with stainless-steel trim as the W5CE3024XS (Est. $600)

Breaking it down

Much better than its price would indicate. That's the assessment of the experts at Reviewed.com who expected the worst going in considering the W5CE3024XB's price tag, and came away impressed. "Despite our initial misgivings, the W5CE3024XB turned out to be a pretty admirable performer, says James Aitchison. It doesn't generate the hottest high heat, nor the lowest low heat, but it comes pretty close to the performance of the best cooktops Reviewed.com has tested. That said, unless you have time to burn, use the single high-output "Power Burner" when boiling large pots as it out performs the rest of the heating elements in that regard by a wide margin. User sentiment largely mirrors that of Reviewed.com. At HomeDepot.com, owner satisfaction is high, as evidenced by the cooktop's 4.5-star rating. A few do wish for a little more cooking power, or a different layout or line up of heating elements. However, as with most smoothops, frustration with keeping things shiny and clean is the most oft-voiced complaint, and those are dwarfed by the number of completely or mostly pleased owners.

Features and design

Not much to see. If lots of bells and whistles and a cutting edge design that makes a statement is high on your must-have list, you likely won't find W5CE3024XB to be a great fit. That's the trade-off of getting this cooktop's performance at this price point. Aitchison is blunt: "We know looks aren't everything, but this cooktop looks pretty dull." Still, he adds, it's tough to be too critical on that front given the price tag, and he finds a plus in the design: "Its low-impact level of style means it can fit into many preexisting kitchen designs without any fuss." The heating element line up is basic, and includes two low-power 6-inch elements, a mid-power 7-inch element and a high power (but only 2,500 watts) 9-inch element. Controls are basic knobs, but those are dishwasher-safe.
