Improvements in insulation have made modern coolers capable cooling and (sometimes even chilling) food and drinks for longer periods of time. Of course, some coolers do a much better job than others. New professional tests of coolers were scarce but user review and feedback on consumer websites gave insight into which coolers really excel.
 

Best large, wheeled hard-sided cooler

Slate.com: Slate reviewer Tom Bartlett tests six large coolers, filling them with ice and beer, setting them outside in both sunny and shaded areas, and opening them every 20 minutes over a period of several hours.

Choice magazine: This Australian consumer website conducts tests on a variety of medium-sized coolers by first chilling them to 71 degrees F, then loading them to 35 percent capacity, filling them with ice and placing them in a 90-degree F room.

Amazon.com: Amazon user posts are overwhelmingly positive about the Coleman 50-Quart Ultimate Xtreme, applauding its rugged durability, roomy capacity, and amenities such as a channel drain and cup holders.

REI.com: REI customers are enthusiastic about the 50-quart Ultimate Xtreme, with users praising its portability and ability to stay chilled for a number of days.

Buzzillions.com: There's only one review available for the 50-quart Wheeled Ultimate Xtreme model (although other sizes of Ultimate Xtreme coolers also get enthusiastic posts); however, this owner gives the review some weight by saying the cooler can hold ice throughout a five-day trip in the desert.

Amazon.com: About a dozen Amazon posters are, on the whole, very enthusiastic about this cooler's ability to keep food and drinks cold all day.

Amazon.com: The majority of Amazon posters say this cooler does the job and keeps things cold for up to five days, with one reviewer saying his cooler kept ice frozen for almost six days.

REI.com: REI customers are enthusiastic about the Coleman 36-quart Xtreme Polylite Cooler, with kudos for its ability to maintain cold interior temperatures for up to five days.

BassPro.com: Users who post on this retail website rave about the Coleman 36-quart Xtreme Polylite Cooler, saying it's compact but also rugged and durable, and can keep ice intact for five days, just as the manufacturer claims.

Target.com: While there are only two user reviews on the Target website, both rave about the Coleman FlipLid's cooling capabilities and compact size, and one poster says it kept her husband's insulin medication cold throughout a two-day trip.
