Clarity is the only phone manufacturer that offers a full array of accessibility features

Although there are several cordless phones touting amplified sound or features for those with hearing and sight limitations, these phones work well for anyone who wants better volume control and larger buttons. This market is tailored to seniors; however, we found positive reviews for some of these phones from people who just like their ease of use and extra features.

There is very little competition in this category. Currently, the only cordless phone with a full spectrum of features for those with hearing or sight loss that has gotten good reviews is the Clarity XLC3.4 Amplified Cordless Phone (*Est. $100 with one handset). It offers talking caller ID to identify who is calling, and it speaks aloud the digits you dial. The keypad is well-lit, large and easy to press, customers say, and the backlit screen has high contrast and larger-than-normal numbers. The ringer is loud, and the receiver is amplified and compatible with hearing aids.

A loud, clear speakerphone and belt clip/headset jack offer hands-free calling. Users rave about the difference the phone has made for older relatives who are beginning to lose their sight or hearing. In some cases, people say the phone sounds better, and is loud enough, even when used without hearing aids. The battery on the Clarity XLC3.4 Amplified Cordless Phone acts as a backup during a power outage, allowing the owner to continue to send and receive calls. It's expandable with up to four handsets. This 1.9 GHz DECT phone gets overall excellent reviews from customers at Amazon.com; it is sometimes identified with model number 59234. It's not cheap and doesn't come with an answering machine, but the Clarity XLC3.4 is a clear winner among users.
