Bottom line

The Presto 05411 GranPappy isn't loaded with bells and whistles, but it's ideal for frying small servings of french fries, chicken and other foods. Reviews say it's easy to use, simple to clean, durable and reliable. It's also among the more affordable deep fryers, so it's ideal for those who don't fry often and therefore don't want to spend a lot of money.

Quick, thorough, even cooking. The Presto 05411 GranPappy is a  larger version of the Presto FryDaddy ($25 ) , the IT has  a 6-cup capacity that makes it ideal for preparing about six small servings or two to three larger servings. It heats up to the ideal frying temperature in about 15 minutes. Most owners say this 1,500-watt deep fryer cooks foods evenly and thoroughly, but a few detractors say foods like breaded chicken burn on the outside and don't cook completely on the inside.

Ease of use

Simple design. Like the smaller FryDaddy, the Presto 05411 GranPappy has no temperature controls; simply plug it in and wait for it to heat up to the desired temperature. The nonstick removable bowl must be hand-washed and can't be submerged, and the fryer must be unplugged and allowed to cool completely before washing. Don't use the plastic lid until the fryer has completely cooled or it will melt.

Included spoon is handy. The Presto 05411 GranPappy includes a slotted spoon instead of a frying basket. This is useful for both lifting and draining oil from cooked foods and for turning foods over during cooking, which a standard deep-fryer basket can't do. The fryer's power cord features a magnetic safety connection that turns it off immediately if the container falls or is jostled during cooking. The accompanying lid is handy for storing used oil directly in the pot for later reuse, and rubber non-skid feet keep the fryer from sliding across a countertop.

Exceptional longevity. The Presto 05411 GranPappy will last for years, according to owners posting feedback at and; just a few users report malfunctioning or defective units. This heavy-duty, cast aluminum deep fryer is backed by a one-year warranty.
