The 40-pint Soleus CFM-40E gets hundreds of positive owner reviews, but it still receives its share of complaints about durability and customer service that are all too common with dehumidifiers. Reviews say the Soleus CFM-40E is quieter than most and can work in rooms as cold as 36 degrees Fahrenheit without icing up. The Soleus CFM-40E is rated to remove 40 pints of moisture per day from the air, but be aware that the collection cup has a capacity of only 12.5 pints. If you need a dehumidifier for a larger area or a more humid space, consider the Danby DDR7009REE (*Est. $250), a larger, more expensive model.

There aren't many professional reviews for dehumidifiers. ConsumerReports.org has the best coverage, but it doesn't review Soleus, and many models are now discontinued. Thus, we mostly rely on owner reviews at Amazon.com, Epinions.com and Newegg.com.

3. NewEgg.com

The Soleus CFM-40E 40 Pint Dehumidifier receives 4 out of 5 stars from more than two dozen owners. The 50 percent who give it the highest rating agree it's quiet and works quickly. A few say it is best hooked up to a hose, because emptying is an annoyance.

4. ConsumerGuide.com

ConsumerGuide.com has a handful of reviews of dehumidifiers, but they are rather dated. As is usually the case at this website, there is no indication of testing. There's also little information that can't be gleaned from reading a manufacturer's brochure. The Soleus Air CFM-40E is rated "below average," but the only drawback noted is that you must wait 30 minutes after shutoff to empty it.
