The Soleus Air CFM-40E gets better owner-written ratings than other dehumidifiers, as well as positive professional recommendations. Owners say it works well and isn't too noisy. The 40-pint Soleus dehumidifier can… operate in temperatures as cold as 36 degrees Fahrenheit -- lower than other models -- and it has an auto-defrost feature to prevent freezing. Owners in general say the Soleus dehumidifier is very good at removing humidity, but one consideration is its small collection tank, which can hold only about 12.5 pints. So, unless you use the continuous-drainage hose, you'll be emptying the tank fairly often.

For damp areas such as basements, reviewers say you'll want a unit with a high water-removal rating. Owners say that the 70-pint Frigidaire FDF70S1 quickly reduces humidity levels.
