Though some computers are faster, it's tough to find a computer that offers so much for so little as the Gateway DX4822-01. Pluses start with a 1 TB (1,000 GB) hard drive, 6 GB of memory, a multi-format DVD burner and more. The Intel duel-core Pentium processor isn't the beefiest available, but is typical among better computers in this price range and will get the job done for all but the most intensive of tasks. Graphics performance is hampered by the integrated Intel graphics, but there's plenty of room inside for an upgraded graphics card and other add-ons, as well as available free expansion slots to accommodate them. There are also free bays for an extra hard drive and an extra optical drive. If you are on a tighter budget, the Compaq Presario CQ5210F doesn't have quite as impressive a hardware lineup, but it can handle most everyday computing tasks.

Though CNET's Justin Yu wistfully finds the more powerful, more expensive and now discontinued Gateway SX2800-01 a more compelling choice, he adds that the Gateway DX4822-01 is a very capable performer.
