The Pure Digital Flip Ultra is slightly less expensive than its cousin, the well-regarded Pure Digital Flip Mino (Discontinued), and some users actually find it more convenient because of one major difference: The Ultra runs on AA batteries, unlike the rechargeable Mino. Users say the AA batteries are especially convenient if you're not near an outlet, or if you don't want to wait for the camcorder to charge. However, to house those chunky batteries, the Ultra is 40 percent bigger than the Mino. Experts say the Ultra's video is mediocre compared with full-size camcorders, and not quite as good as the Mino. Users say the Ultra is ideal for shooting quick, YouTube-type videos. The Pure Digital Flip Ultra includes software that uploads directly to YouTube or AOL, although not MySpace (available on the Mino).
Trusted Reviews, a British site, has the most comprehensive review of the Pure Digital Flip Ultra, covering every aspect of the camcorder and comparing it with the Creative Vado. The reviews at Laptop magazine, The New York Times and CNet are briefer, but they are thorough and based on testing. We found a comprehensive video review at YouTube, and some user reviews at Amazon.com also include videos shot with the Flip Ultra.

According to New York Times technology columnist David Pogue, the inexpensive and feature-poor Flip Ultra is a "blast'" to film with. Pogue's testing finds plenty of warts, but also lots of things to be pleased about.
