The bright blue Canon PowerShot D10 splashed onto the market this past spring and is Canon's "first dip into waterproof territory," says Rik Fairlie of The New York Times. Nevertheless, this novice swimmer laps the competition with its winning combination of ruggedness and Canon's superior image quality. But don't look for the D10 to win any fashion awards. Experts describe it as bulbous, egg-shaped and quirky compared to sleeker underwater cameras on the market -- like the Panasonic Lumix DSC-TS1 (*Est. $335).

The D10's extra girth comes from its husky protective outer casing, which makes it one of the hardiest compact digital cameras. The camera is waterproof down to 33 feet so you can enjoy underwater photography, compared to 10 feet on the TS1. The D10 is also dustproof and shockproof, withstanding sandy beaches and drops up to four feet. Skiers, snowboarders and dog sledders will appreciate that the camera is freeze-proof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. However, "at 6.7 ounces and a maximum thickness of 1.9 inches, the D10 will strain the average pocket," says Fairlie.

The large design of the Canon PowerShot D10 affords plenty of room for large buttons that are easy to read and press -- a plus when shooting underwater or wearing bulky winter gloves. The thick buttons are crafted to ward off water and debris, says Patrick Michael Brady of DigitalCamera-HQ.com, who adds that they sit "tightly in their seats" but are still easy to activate. The shutter button is the largest among the seven underwater cameras he tested. By comparison, the thinner profile and tiny buttons of the TS1 add up to more difficult handling in adverse conditions.

Image quality excels: in nearly every group test of waterproof cameras, the D10 delivers the best photos. DPReview.com says the D10 has the "the sharpest, most detailed images" in and out of the water at low ISO settings, and Fairlie praises the accurate exposures and warm skin tones. The 30 frames per second (fps) VGA movie quality "is rather less appealing," according to Which? magazine, although editors note that compact digital cameras can't compete with true digital camcorders. The video, however, is stored as QuickTime .MOV files, which makes uploads to YouTube a snap.

DPReview.com, TrustedReviews.com, Steves-Digicams.com and DigitalCamera-HQ.com are among the photography enthusiast sites that test and compare the Canon PowerShot D10 to its waterproof rivals. Rounding out our reviews is an underwater group test from The New York Times' photography guru, Rik Fairlie, and user postings at Amazon.com, which help to reveal potential problems with real-life use.

1. DPReview.com

In this underwater camera test group, the Canon PowerShot D10 shares the winner's circle with the Panasonic DMC-TS1 for overall performance, although the D10 rates higher for underwater handling. It also has the fastest response times, but the D10 is definitely not the most compact camera on the block.

2. TrustedReviews.com

In terms of weather-proof specifications, the Canon PowerShot D10 "comfortably" beats the Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 and the Pentax Optio W60. And when put to the test, the D10 pulls ahead with best overall image quality and ergonomics. The D10 is "the easiest to handle underwater thanks to its chunky shape and large controls," says Cliff Smith.

3. StevesDigicams.com

The editors at Steves-Digicams.com are impressed by the new Canon PowerShot D10. The camera wins points for its easy menu navigation, "blazing fast performance" and "ability to capture pleasing images no matter what the conditions." While editors note the D10 is a bit pricier than other compact digital cameras, they add that the D10 is competitively priced among waterproof compacts.

"A durable beach buddy" is one of the ways Michael Patrick Brady describes the rugged Canon PowerShot D10. Although he considers the egg-shaped design "a little unusual," his tests show that form serves function, particularly in terms of handling and button design.

5. The New York Times

The New York Times personal-tech guru Rik Fairlie conducts a pool test on five waterproof point-and-shoot models to see which ones sink or swim. Even though the PowerShot D10 is Canon's "first dip into waterproof territory," the novice swimmer easily laps the competition -- including the Pentax Optio W60 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1.

6. Amazon.com

More than 70 owners comment on the Canon PowerShot D10. The majority agree that it's easy to use and takes great photos. It's also durable, having survived documented bumps and bruises. While several users complain about poor mic quality, most of the setbacks center around what the D10 lacks in the feature department -- RAW format support, GPS and a lens cap.
