Reviewers give a big thumbs-up to the Canon PowerShot Elph 300 HS for best-in-class features and performance. As the midline model in Canon's Elph series, the 4.3-ounce 300 HS is one of the tiniest cameras available with a 5x zoom lens (24mm - 120mm). It has a highly sensitive sensor for superior low-light shooting along with full HD video (1080p). Video features include the same super-slow-motion capability found on the Casio Exilim models, a dedicated recording button and an HDMI cable for TV playback. Even better, critics say, the optical zoom lens works in video mode. "Hallelujah," says Mike Perlman at InfoSyncWorld.com.

Reviewers like the camera's easy handling and praise its Movie Digest mode, which saves 4-second clips of each photo and turns them into a slide show. In tests, the Elph outpaces the Kodak EasyShare M580 and the Nikon Coolpix S8100 with richer colors, though the S8100 wins for sharpness. However, users at Amazon.com say that the chassis dings easily, while critics are lukewarm about the sandpaper-like body finish and 2.7-inch LCD, which is smaller than the 3-inch screen on the Canon PowerShot Elph 100 HS. Nevertheless, the 300 HS nails excellent ratings overall from reviewers, who say it's a keeper.

We found the most comprehensive reviews of the Canon PowerShot Elph 300 HS at PCMag.com and CNET, which conduct lab tests that show how the 300 HS stacks up next to market rivals. InfoSyncWorld.com, ImagingResource.com and Steves-Digicams.com offer meticulous standalone reviews, while lots of users at Amazon.com chime in about their experiences.

David Pierce says the Canon PowerShot Elph 300 HS is a solid point-and-shoot model. He praises its shooting speeds and 5x zoom lens that works while shooting HD video, and the universal mini-USB and mini-HDMI cables are also a plus. His main gripes are the relatively small 2.7-inch LCD and the coarse finish of the body, which he says feels like sandpaper.

2. CNET

"It's small enough that you'll never hesitate to take it with you," says Joshua Goldman. Even with the tiny size, he says, the controls on the Canon PowerShot Elph 300 HS are easy to maneuver, although the deep menus are "laborious." Nevertheless, he says the 300 HS is a fun camera that offers excellent photo quality.

"You can take this baby anywhere and everywhere," say David Elrich and Stephanie Boozer. They also like that the lens is longer than those on most point-and-shoot cameras, and the high-sensitivity shooting system is also a perk. The 300 HS earns a Dave's Pick designation for its "unmatched" performance in a sub-$250 camera, despite the weak flash and mixed shooting quality.

4. InfoSyncWorld.com

"Long live the Elph," says Mike Perlman of the "sinfully tiny" Canon PowerShot Elph 300 HS, which goes beyond his expectations. He gives high scores for the top-notch auto mode and admirable image quality in bright light, but he is underwhelmed by the average-resolution LCD and "hit or miss" video quality.

5. StevesDigicams.com

"Excellent buy for your buck," say reviewers. The Elph 300 offers "unmatched features and performance" for its price and size, even though it suffers from easily-dented lens bezels. Stand-out features include "blazing fast" speeds and excellent low-light shooting capabilities.

6. Amazon.com

The majority of more than 270 users consider the Canon PowerShot Elph 300 HS a great camera that's worth every penny. However, a small contingent beg to differ. They say the 300 HS has disappointing image quality and a rough finish, and the camera body is vulnerable to scratches and dents. "I'm sickened to see it all messed up so quickly," says one owner.
