If you want very detailed reviews with a lot of tech talk, Imaging-Resource.com, Digital Camera Resource Page and Steve's Digicams offer the most information. But as ultracompacts are geared to a more general market, some may find the coverage more digestible at CNet.com, PC Magazine and Consumer Reports. Regardless, all six base their reviews on solid testing. Owner reviews at Amazon.com are helpful, but remember that complaints about image quality and tiny manual controls are common to ultracompact digital cameras.

Reviews say the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS is a good choice for an ultracompact digital camera, although the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS (*est. $250) gets the best reviews in this class. The major difference between the two is the SD790 has just a 3X zoom instead of the SD880's 4X, a big issue for some reviewers. Otherwise, you still get Image Stabilization (the IS in the name), a 3-inch LCD display, a 28mm wide-angle lens and the same underpowered flash and same lack of a viewfinder. Ultracompact point-and-shoots aren't targeted at professional photographers, so all of them get some complaints about image quality (especially indoors). But reviews say the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS delivers very good photos in a small easy-to-carry package.

Our Sources

1. Imaging-Resource.com

Imaging Resource does heavy testing and produces credible reviews, the main drawback being that lots of cameras are listed as Dave's Picks, which doesn't narrow things down. The gist is the Canon SD790 IS does everything pretty well, but if you shoot a lot of landscapes, the 3X optical zoom and 28mm wide-angle lens probably won't cut it.

2. Digital Camera Resource Page

DCRP not only performs solid testing but provides numerous samples, including video, so you can see if a camera meets your needs. Owner/reviewer Jeff Keller says the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS has the same image flaws as other cameras in its class but notes battery life is good.

3. CNET

CNet, a reliable source of reviews based on solid testing, gives the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS 3.5 out of five stars, with about two dozen owner ratings combining for a slightly higher score. Bottom line is good photos, flawed design and just a 3X lens.

4. PCMag.com

PC Magazine thoroughly tests products, so the Editors' Choice it gives the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS has some meaning. Reviewer David Gussman raves about the image quality, but doesn't like the control wheel and wishes the wide-angle lens were wider.

5. ConsumerReports.org

Consumer Reports rates more than 60 digicams, including the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS, behind a subscribers-only wall. While there are individual reviews on the cameras beyond the rankings chart, they are shorter than some available for free elsewhere.

6. StevesDigicams.com

Reviews are very thorough here -- in fact, probably more than you'll want to read -- but too many cameras make the "best" lists to make this a first stop for narrowing your choices. The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Review makes a "best" list, the gist being it does the job and is well-built.

7. Amazon.com

The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS gets an extremely high overall score based on more than 120 owner reviews, only about ten giving it fewer than four out of five stars and the vast majority giving it five. Even some who like the camera overall say the manual controls are too small.
