Which DTV Converter Box Should I Buy?
by Matthew Moskovciak
Our Assessment

This brief overview compares five previously reviewed DTV converter boxes. Strengths and weaknesses are briefly noted, and links lead to full reviews of each box. The Dish Network TR-40 CRA and RCA DTA800B1 earn a slight edge over the pack. The TR-40 CRA has a "best-in-class" programming guide, while the DTA800B1 is an all-around good performer with a superior remote. Though not included in this comparison, the Winegard RCDT092A can be battery powered and draws kudos for use with portable analog TVs.

DTV Converter Box Guide
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment

Consumer Reports looks at 31 DTV converter boxes in this update of an earlier report. The magazine's familiar ratings are absent, but boxes are sorted by picture quality, from best (near-DVD quality) to acceptable (roughly comparable to analog TV). Discussion, while not extensive, covers important considerations for each box. No specific recommendations about which are the best DTV converter boxes overall are made, but the full report is available for non-subscribers as well as subscribers.

DTV Converter Reviews and Ratings
by Editors of DTVFiasco.com
Our Assessment

We don't know the background of the anonymous editor or editors here, but we admire the site's well-documented testing. The test setup is completely described -- right down to its location relative to TV transmitters. Reviews are critical and balanced, and a statement stating that manufacturer-submitted boxes are not accepted aids credibility. Ratings are provided, but most are too close together to provide much guidance. Reading the reviews, however, makes the author's preferences clear.

News, Reviews and How-Tos
by Peter Putman
Our Assessment

Journalist and technology guru Peter Putman maintains this informative, but hard-to-navigate HDTV information site. Several DTV converter boxes are covered here in detailed single-product reports and occasional two-product comparisons. The Zenith DTT901 is called the best DTV converter box for the average user on the strength of its clean interface and "super-simple operation." A comparative review of the RCA DTA800 and the Channel Master CM7000 gives the slight nod to the latter for its better tuner and inclusion of an S-video connector for better image quality. Video quality of the GE 22730 "leaves something to be desired."

Coupon Eligible Converter Box (CECB)
by Contributors to AVSForum.com
Our Assessment This busy enthusiast site for everything home theater related includes a forum discussing DTV converter boxes. All of the most popular options -- along with many more obscure boxes -- get a good amount of feedback. A voting thread shows the Zenith DTT901 and Channel Master CM 7000 are clear favorites among the posters here. The Digital Stream DTX9950 also gets some consideration.

Pick Your DTV Converter Box
by Tim Gideon
Our Assessment This roundup article discusses four DTV converter boxes. Key considerations, as well as pluses and minuses for each converter, are briefly discussed. However, only one of the converter boxes is actually tested; assessments for the others are made based on features and manufacturer-supplied information, greatly diminishing the value of the recommendations made.

DTV Converter Box
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our Assessment Amazon.com lets readers post reviews of gear that they own, including DTV converters. At the time of our last visit, the site listed lots of different DTV converters, though not all are currently available. The Zenith DTT901 is notable for having a good rating following more than 50 reviews. The Winegard TCDT09A only has a handful of reviews, but every user gives that converter a perfect score.

Digital Tuners and Converters
by Contributors to BestBuy.com
Our Assessment

Only three government-coupon-eligible converter boxes are listed here, but two get enough feedback for the user reviews to be truly useful, and one -- the Insignia NS-DXA1-APT -- is a clear favorite among owners. BestBuy.com's reviews are especially helpful because they include subratings for value, ease of use and features, along with a bottom-line statement on whether or not the owner would recommend the DTV converter to a friend.

Converters

Our Assessment This page includes listings for two DTV converter boxes, along with some other unrelated products. Navigation is easy because both the rating and number of reviews is listed on the main page. Only one converter has any feedback, but nearly 180 users have weighted in on the Digital Stream DTX9950, giving it a good but not great rating.

Digital Converter Box Reviews
by Contributors to Walmart.com
Our Assessment Walmart.com lists only two digital converter boxes, but both get lots of feedback -- more than 150 ratings and reviews. Neither converter box leaves all customers happy, but satisfaction is clearly higher with the RCA DTA800B1.
