We found the best comparison ratings of the Nikon D40 digital SLR camera at What Digital Camera, a U.K. publication, and at Popular Photography. Jeff Keller at DCResource.com provides the most thorough, detailed review, while PC Magazine provides the most succinct criticism. The review at Imaging-Resource.com adds some useful details not noted elsewhere.

Reviews say Nikon D40 digital SLR camera is the best entry-level camera, since it takes consistently good shots on automatic settings and is very easy to use. The six-megapixel resolution is plenty for prints up to 8x10 inches in size. The 2.5-inch LCD screen is bright, but it's smaller than the screen on the competing Canon Rebel XSi (*est. $715). The Nikon D40 does have a spot meter, plus metering that takes color into account in setting exposures. Maximum shooting speed is 2.5 frames per second, and three-point autofocus doesn't track action as well as the Canon Rebel XSi. It also doesn't focus as well in dim light, or provide depth-of-field preview - but reviews say the Nikon is still a good buy. For more advanced features like sensor cleaning, live-image preview, image stabilization and software that processes raw images, reviews recommend the Canon Rebel XSi (*est. $715) instead.
