Lives up to its claims, November 18, 2009

I did considerable research before finding a field recorder I thought I would like, and the result was the Edirol. I am using it to record interviews that are part of research for a book. It is easy to use, the sound quality is excellent and the user has many options for recording modes. It is easily transportable and is also small enough that it is not intimidating to those I interview. If there is no power outlet available, I use it in battery mode, but I prefer the power adaptor. Having just started using the Edirol, I have only scratched the surface of its capabilities ... but so far, so good. I particularly like the high gain feature; it enables me to pick up interviewees who speak very softly. All in all, a very useful tool!

A High qaulity recorder, November 11, 2009

I am using this recorder to record Feldenkraiz lessons. It isn't a clean environment, but the quality of the sound when used with a simple lapel microphone is excellent. You need to be very careful with the way the microphone is connected, otherwise there is an annoying hiss. The quality of recording lectures with the build in microphone is not good enough, but it is excellent for recording music. My son is a musician and is using the recorder to record music in rehearsals.

Great for instrumental recordings, November 10, 2009

I can't add much more than what has already been stated over and over. I've extremely impressed with the R-09HR. We are using it for honor band, college audition, and music camp audition recordings. We can do it easily right from our home. My son just turns it on, controls it with the remote, then records every practice from scales to audition pieces. When he gets one just right, off it goes to the PC where the pyro Audio Creator LE software burns it to a CD. I've also used Audacity, which is freeware and does about the same job. The user interface was easy to learn and very intuitive. Love it, love it, love it!

Edirol Recorder for non musicians, November 8, 2009

My main use of this recorder will be to record audio for "slide presentations" where I usually add a combination of mood music, narrative and background sounds (all made into a video format). My first use was to record background sounds on the beach in northern California. I quickly learned that ANY WIND at all causes the recording to be worthless. However, I still had the thin and flexible foam sheet (packing material) that came in the box. I rolled it over the two mics and secured it with a rubber band. The wind noise was gone. Great clean sound. Since the remote (input) favors being in 'front' of the recorder, it might not be as valuable to me as it would to the advertised use by musicians. I will be testing that in a few weeks to see both how far I can get away from the recorder and at what angles I can still control the unit with the remote. Both the "quick start guide" and the full manual are well written. Since my goal was clean and true sound, I'm already happy with my purchase. I'm planning on making a tripod adapter so it can be securely placed in areas where my presence would disturb wildlife.

A little jewel of a product, November 2, 2009
I've only used this a few times, but I can say that it is very easy to use, and to my ear records with excellent sound quality. A very well thought out and nicely designed device.

1. CNET

CNET's Donald Bell tests the Edirol R-09HR and comes away impressed. Negatives are minimal, but include its large size and the lack of a tripod mount. Bell also says the digital recorder is hard to use in low light or darkness. However, all that pales in comparison to the Edirol R-09HR's pluses, leaving Bell to conclude, "If you want a high-quality audio recorder that fits in your pocket, the Edirol R-09HR can't be beat."

2. O'Reilly Digital Media

Mark Nelson compares the Edirol R-09HR to its predecessor, the Edirol R-09, and to the M-Audio MicroTrack II in this very detailed review. Though the emphasis is on using the recorders to capture music, there's plenty of information here for all users. Pluses include the fact that the Edirol R-09HR is very easy to use, and that it includes a very helpful user manual.

Though not a review, per se, this article delves into the special considerations that go into selecting a digital voice recorder for use with Mac computers and the Mac OS. Among the recommendations made, the Edirol R-09HR is called a great pick for those who need the best quality recordings.

4. Amazon.com

While there aren't a ton of reviews at Amazon.com, there are more than enough to establish a clear pattern of satisfaction among owners. Impressively, not one out of the dozens of users that have posted here to date give the Edirol R-09HR less than four out of five stars, and the overwhelming majority give it a perfect score.
