Biokleen Automatic Dish Powder

Green dishwasher detergent, powder

Pros
  • Free of dyes and chlorine
  • Inexpensive
  • Scented and unscented versions
Cons
  • Performs poorly on pots and pans
  • Can leave a white residue

Biokleen Automatic Dish Powder is an eco-friendly dishwasher detergent that consumers say cleans very well and costs less than other green detergents. It's also the only non-tablet detergent that earns something like a consensus of positive reviews.

Like Method Smarty Dish Dishwasher Tabs, Biokleen is free of dyes and chlorine, and it is made with plant-based ingredients. Also like its green competitor, Biokleen Automatic Dish Powder is available in scented and fragrance-free versions. The big difference is price: Biokleen is one of the least expensive detergents (eco-friendly or otherwise) discussed in this report, and many users are pleasantly surprised by how many loads they can get out of the 32-ounce canister. We did find a handful of complaints that this powdered detergent can leave a white residue, in which case users suggest using less detergent or adding a tablespoon of vinegar as a rinse aid.

Biokleen is not included in any of the professional reviews we consulted, but it does earn kudos from consumers at a number of retail sites -- albeit far fewer than top-rated detergents like Finish and Cascade. Some say it doesn't clean heavily soiled loads well, while a couple others say the detergent etched their glassware. We found consumer reviews for Biokleen on Amazon.com and Drugstore.com.

Biokleen Dish Powder is the second-best detergent according to Bestcovery.com. Shaw praises the concentrated, chlorine-free formula that's free of dyes and harsh chemicals. The review doesn't speak to the detergent's effectiveness, though.
