Bottom Line

The Frigidaire FFBD1821MS is a top choice if you don't have room for a full-sized built-in dishwasher. Owners say it's very easy to install and cleans just as well as a 24-inch model; however, some aren't thrilled that this costs more than a 24 inch dishwasher.

Breaking it down

At YaleAppliance.com blogger Steve Sheinkopf says the Frigidaire FFBD1821MS is a good value. He also praises its many features and says it's better than the 24-inch size. Among those features is a delay start, a China & Crystal and Heavy Wash cycles and high temperature wash. It also has the option to turn off the heat dry option to save energy. Owners say this compact dishwasher works very well, both in cleaning and drying; although a few say it leaves some things quite wet. Still, most say they are very happy with this Frigidaire. It also has a stainless steel, rather than plastic, tub, which is a very nice feature at this price point.

Read the instructions before loading the Frigidaire FFBD1821MS. Some who complained about the small capacity of this 18-inch dishwasher were advised by Frigidaire to read the instructions for loading the dishes that are in the owner's manual, and users say that definitely helped them maximize the dishwasher's capacity. Others have no problems at all with the size, and say it's perfect for a couple or a small family. The silverware basket has slots to keep the flatware separated.

The Frigidaire FFBD1821MS gets mixed reviews for noise. At 59 dBA, it's not the quietest dishwasher in this report, but most don't' seem bothered. . As we see with almost any item we review that makes any kind of noise, volume is highly objective. We read a number of reviews from owners praising how quite the Frigidaire is, and just as many others naming its noisy operation as its only "con." At YaleAppliance.com, Sheinkopf says most dishwashers are actually quite quiet, especially those made for the U.S. market.

The most complaints we saw about the Frigidaire FFBD1821MS had to do with the price. Plenty of owners are puzzled as to why the 18-inch model costs more than the 24-inch model, the Frigidaire FDB2410HIC (Est. $600). We don't know the answer, but speculate that it could be due to the fact that 18-inch dishwashers are much less in demand than 24-inch dishwashers. This is the stainless steel model, but this compact dishwasher also comes in white as the Frigidaire FFBD1821MW (Est. $650) and in black as the Frigidaire FFBD1821MB (Est. $650). This Frigidaire is Energy Star certified and its estimated yearly operating cost is $30.
