The Maytag JetClean Plus MDB8959AWW has an excellent overall blend of features, design, low noise and price. Design-wise, it has the sleek look of a luxury dishwasher, with a hidden control panel and a single, wide handle. In comparison tests, the machine gets high scores for both cleaning performance and energy efficiency, but it's louder than high-end models like the Kenmore Elite 13962 (*Est. $1,170) . Owners don't seem to mind, however; most reviews are very positive, with particular compliments for quietness. The most common complaint is that installation instructions are hard to follow.

This dishwasher's features include a steam option, a rinse-only cycle, a sanitary cycle, an adjustable top rack and a stainless-steel tub. It also has a hard-food disposer, although that does add somewhat to the machine's noise level. If your budget is tight, the Maytag JetClean Plus MDB7749AWW (*Est. $550) offers many of the same features, but has fewer cycles and the upper rack isn't adjustable.
