The Whirlpool Tall Tub Dishwasher DU1300XTVQ (*Est. $400) receives stronger user recommendations than other budget-priced dishwashers and performs well in professional tests. It lacks some extra features, such as a stainless-steel tub and built-in food disposal, but owners say it cleans very well and isn't too noisy. It does have a soil sensor, which cuts down on power and water use by determining whether additional cleaning can be skipped, and a sanitizing rinse that the manufacturer says kills 99.9 percent of bacteria. If you want more features, the KitchenAid Architect Series II KUDS30IVWH (Discontinued) may be a better bet. It has a stainless-steel tub and spray arms, built-in food disposal and adjustable top rack, but it does cost about $200 more than the Whirlpool.
