When it comes to pet-food advocates and dog owners, Blue Buffalo Wilderness ranks with the best foods available at major pet stores. Meat content is very high; Blue Wilderness Duck Recipe features deboned duck, chicken meal, potato starch, turkey meal and peas as its top ingredients, and other foods in the lineup, such as Blue Wilderness Chicken Recipe (*Est. $30 per 11 lb. bag), are equally good quality. That said, we found more glowing praise for Orijen Adult Formula (*Est. $40 per 15.4 lb. bag). The company uses free-range meats and regionally grown produce in its foods, but Orijen is on the high end of commercial pet foods in terms of cost as well.
Blue Buffalo Wilderness foods are grain-free and use only natural preservatives. In addition, there are no meat byproducts. There have been some past recall issues, but the food was not one of those involved in the spring 2012 recall for salmonella. LifeSource Bits in the food are said to contain additional vitamins and minerals, but we've seen reports that dogs sometimes eat around them, something the company admits can happen because they have a different taste. However, the nutritional sufficiency of the foods does not depend on them.
