Where to Buy

Experts say Canidae All Life Stages formulas are among the better moderately priced canned dog foods. Canidae can be fed as the sole food, though the manufacturer recommends a mix of 25 percent canned and 75 percent dry "to achieve a balanced diet and maintain firm stools." It's a bit more expensive than most supermarket foods -- and a bit harder to find -- but the ingredient list is far superior. Chicken, chicken broth, lamb, chicken liver and ocean whitefish are the top ingredients, and carbohydrates come from high-quality sources such as brown rice.

Canidae Chicken, Lamb and Fish All Life Stages uses high-quality ingredients, and there are no cheap fillers, byproducts or chemical preservatives. Meats are processed in a "human grade" facility, and ingredients are U.S. sourced and tested. The food meets Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards for nutrition.

Canidae All Life Stages is notably less expensive than some premium dog foods such as Newman's Own Organics Organic Beef & Liver (*Est. $2.50 per 12 oz. can),but such foods have a higher meat content and no grains. Costco members might also want to consider Kirkland Cuts in Gravy with Beef and Vegetables (*Est. 67 cents per 13.2 oz. can). This inexpensive dog food has a surprisingly high-quality ingredient list. Expert feedback is unfortunately very limited, but what is available is highly positive.

We did find a bit more feedback for Canidae All Life Stages dog food, on the other hand, but some is more helpful than others. DogFoodAdvisor.com has the most detailed discussion, though it centers on another variety from the company. DogFoodAnalysis.com rates Canidae Chicken, Lamb and Fish All Life Stages but it provides no comments and the report is now rather old. Mary Straus includes Canidae on her list of better dog foods at DogAware.com. A handful of user comments can be found at the Only Natural Pet Store website.

Mike Sagman awards Canidae dog foods a 4-star rating (out of 5), but his evaluation is based on a different formulation. He appreciates that the company uses high-quality ingredients and provides chelated minerals, which are easier for dogs to digest. No undesirable or questionable ingredients are used, leading Sagman to highly recommend Canidae canned dog foods.
