Evo Turkey & Chicken Formula costs less than other premium grain-free dry dog foods, like Orijen. But a 2013 recall for possible salmonella is a stain on the record of this otherwise high-quality food.
Grain-free and protein-rich. Evo Turkey & Chicken Formula has a high meat content and gets its carbohydrates from a high-quality source (potatoes). Although the food includes fruits and vegetables, the first four ingredients are meat or meat meals, and it is grain-free. Some experts say that's best for dogs, which evolved to eat mostly meat and no grain.
Evo has no iffy by-products, only natural preservatives, proteinated minerals for better absorption, probiotics -- all the good stuff experts look for in a premium dry dog food. This food is available in kibble sizes suitable for large and small dogs; the ingredients are identical. Although the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) says Evo Turkey & Chicken Formula is appropriate for all life stages, some experts caution that it's too rich in protein and calcium for some dogs -- particularly large-breed puppies.
Recalled for possible salmonella in 2013. Pet-food advocates were somewhat distressed when Natura -- maker of Evo -- was purchased by Procter & Gamble in 2010. The company promised that ingredient quality would not be compromised and, so far, that promise has been kept. Natura lists the origin of each ingredient (U.S., New Zealand and Europe) on its website.
However, in 2013, all Natura dry cat and dog food -- including Evo -- was recalled due to possible salmonella contamination. No pet or human illnesses were reported.
Costs less per pound than its grain-free premium rivals. Reviewers' favorite dry dog food is Orijen Adult Dog (Est. $45 for a 15-lb. bag) ; its meat-rich, grain-free formula and strict attention to quality are unsurpassed among dry foods, experts say. But Evo is one way to go grain-free for less. Comparably priced foods, such as Acana Chicken and Burbank Potato (Est. $35 for a 15-lb. bag) , usually contain grains.
Evo Turkey & Chicken is analyzed here and receives the top 5-star rating. The food is said to mimic a dog's "ancestral diet" with an abundance of meat compared to a typical dog food. Mike Sagman "enthusiastically" recommends it, based on that and the quality of its ingredients.

A small-bites version of Evo Turkey & Chicken is rated here. High meat content and good carbohydrate sources are among the positives, with no negatives cited (although the site does point out Evo's previous recalls for salmonella). The food gets a perfect 5 stars.

Mary Straus finds many positives for Natura dog foods, including Evo, but also notes the change in ownership of the brand. Straus continues to recommend Evo, but notes that she's heard reports that some dogs don't tolerate the high protein and high calcium content as well as others.
