What every best Dog Food has:
- Complete nutrition.
- Whole meat or a named meat meal as its top ingredient.
- No fillers or low-quality grains.
A top-quality dry dog food. Experts say Orijen is as good as dry dog food gets -- and it earns top scores from every review site we consulted. Orijen has great meat content: Fresh chicken is the first ingredient, followed by fresh turkey, fresh whole eggs, fresh chicken liver, fresh whole herring and fresh whole flounder. Most meats are fresh, with no preservatives, while others are air dried to produce a more concentrated protein source. The food is grain-free, and carbohydrates come from high-quality sources such as lentils, chickpeas, pumpkin, squash and other fruits and veggies.
Canadian made, with local ingredients. Orijen dog food is made in the company's own facilities (many dog foods, including some top brands, outsource manufacturing to a third party). Ingredients are locally sourced, all meats are either raised cage free or wild caught, and no ingredients made in China are used. Meats and other proteins are certified as fit for human consumption by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (Orijen is based in Canada). All meats are now preservative free. Orijen dog food has never been subject to a recall.
Quality doesn't come cheap. While there are very few downsides to feeding your dog with this high-quality food, Orijen is harder to find than some other high-quality dog foods and it's fairly expensive. Taste of the Wild High Prairie (Est. $50 for a 30-lb. bag), another well-regarded grain-free kibble costs substantially less, though it has less meat content and a recall record that while good, is not quite as spotless.

Mike Sagman specifically evaluates Orijen Adult Dog, awarding it a perfect 5 stars. He discusses ingredients and how well the food meets the nutritional needs of a dog. Sagman says Orijen is "enthusiastically recommended." On caveat, however, is that Sagman is yet to evaluate the new formula.
Orijen makes Mary Straus's list of recommended dog kibbles. She notes the high quality of the ingredients used and says that the dog food is "highly recommended." She adds, "I've heard nothing but good feedback from those who feed Orijen."

More than 1,300 dog owners have largely very nice things to say about Orijen dog food. It earns a 4.6-star rating, with 93 percent saying that they would recommend the dog food to a friend. Given the change in formula, we paid special attention to the most recent reviews and found that while there are a handful of reports of poorer dog acceptance, the vast majority say that their pets continue to love the food.
We see far less feedback at Amazon.com -- just over 20 reviews for the 25 lb. and 13 lb. sizes -- and a little less satisfaction, with Orijen earning a 4.2-star rating. One owner complains about the new formula, others about other factors, such as price, but most say the food is terrific. Elsewhere on the site, the smallest, 4.5 lb. bag draws just over 50 reviews, and similar feedback, with a 4.3 star score.
