Baby Jogger City Select

Pros
  • Accommodates two bassinets or car seats
  • 16 seating configurations with optional accessories
  • Huge, easy-access storage basket
Cons
  • Heavy to push
  • Small seats

Bottom line

The Baby Jogger City Select convertible stroller is a top pick by experts and parents for its versatility. It can be arranged in 16 different seating configurations with the purchase of optional accessories. It can be used for twins or two children of different ages and has the ability to accommodate two car seats or two bassinets. It's a high-end stroller with a price to match, but owners warn it can be heavy to push and maneuver with two kids.

Safety

No issues here. The Baby Jogger City Select has a convenient hand-operated parking brake on the handle and locking swivel wheels in front. The five-point, no-rethread harnesses are padded and easy to clasp and adjust. Reviewers love the large multi-position canopies that provide plenty of sun protection.

Ease of use

Decent for a double. The Baby Jogger City Select has a narrow profile, so it easily fits through doors, store aisles and between parked cars. Maneuverability isn't always a breeze though. It can be quite heavy to push when carrying two children, and one Amazon.com reviewer says it takes "super human" effort to lift and get up and down curbs, which can be remedied somewhat by putting the bigger child in the seat closer to you.

The Forever-Air tires never go flat and handle varied terrain like snow, grass and mud, although it is not an all-terrain stroller. The stroller has a one-hand fold but doesn't self-lock or stand.

Lifestyle features

Many accessories must be purchased separately. Getting the most versatility out of the Baby Jogger City Select requires purchasing optional accessories, including the Second Seat Kit (*Est. $180), one or more car seat adapters (prices vary) and one or two Bassinet Kits (*Est. $100). With all of that, there are 16 different ways to position the kids. They can face you, the world or each other in a number of combinations, and the stadium seating gives each kid a good view. A button reclines seats to four positions fairly easily with one hand, though one reviewer says it is stiff to operate. Parents say it's easy to get kids in and out of the stroller, even though you have to bend down to reach the front seat.

A few reviewers say they worry their older toddlers may outgrow the seats, but at least one expert reviewer notes that her 5 year old fit well; the canopies adjust upward to add several inches to the seat height. As a bonus, the peek-a-boo windows on the canopy close quietly with magnets, instead of noisy Velcro. The City Select has a telescoping handle to accommodate both short and tall parents.

Reviewers rave about the large storage basket that can be accessed from all sides but say the fabric is flimsy and rips easily. For the high price, they want cup holders and snack trays included, instead of being offered as optional add-ons.

Ranging from 28 to 34 pounds, depending on seating configurations, the City Select is not easy to lug on public transportation, a consideration for urban parents. Suburban parents need to know that it may not fit in smaller car trunks.

Customer service

Long, solid warranty: Baby Jogger has a limited lifetime warranty on its stroller frame and a one-year warranty on textiles and soft materials. Baby Jogger has an excellent reputation for customer service.

1. Babble.com

Review Credibility: Excellent In its annual double stroller review, Babble.com selects the Baby Jogger City Select as a favorite for versatility, saying it's best for parents looking for a stroller to last through multiple kids and stages. It has 16 different seating configurations and works as a single and a double. Since it accommodates two car seats, it's a good pick for twins. Though it's a bit long, editors say it's narrow enough for city streets and note that the Forever-Air tires can handle bumpy terrain. They call the one-hand fold "simply brilliant" but think the stroller might not fit in super-compact trunks.
