June 2008. The Philips DVP3140/37 is a low-priced, standard-definition DVD player. It doesn't come with many extras, but it can read a wide variety of DVD disc formats and is DivX-compatible. Reviewers generally agree that installation and use are simple enough, and that picture quality is satisfactory. Build quality is okay, but we've seen some complaints about a flimsy disc tray. This model is now discontinued, but you might see it available on eBay.

Though low-priced DVD players rarely get much coverage from professional reviewers, DragonSteelMods.com -- a site more highly regarded for its coverage of computer-related products -- gives the Philips DVP3140/37 a reasonably detailed report. User reports are also helpful, and we found lots of feedback at sites like Amazon.com and Epinions.com.
