March 2009. The Sony DVP-CX995V is a jukebox-style DVD changer that holds up to 400 discs at once. In addition, it upconverts video to 1080i and can play SACDs. While some experts recommend the Sony DVP-CX995V as a player that's uniquely suitable if you have a DVD and CD collection that's gotten out of hand, video performance isn't the best, and owner reviews are definitely split. If you're more critical of video quality, the Oppo DV-980H (*est. $170) is a superior performer and lower priced, but it will only handle one disc at a time.

We saw a couple of good professional reviews of the Sony DVP-CX995V. The best is at Consumer Reports, which includes this changer in an earlier report on standard-definition DVD players. CNET's coverage is also excellent and includes the results of in-depth testing by the site's editors. User-written reviews at Amazon.com and Epinions.com are revealing as they illustrate pluses and minuses that professionals sometimes miss.

2. CNET

CNET's Matthew Moskovciak says that the Sony DVP-CX995V is bulky and slow to respond, but that this changer is great at making a large disc collection more manageable. Video quality isn't as good as some other upconverting DVD players.

3. Amazon.com

The Sony DVP-CX995V has garnered more than 250 ratings here, though the composite score is a lackluster 3.5 out of five stars. Most owners appear satisfied with this player's performance, but a sizable number of them have gripes as well. Many complain that after spending hours entering DVD information, the player erased the data. A small handful note that the player scratched some discs.

4. Epinions.com

The Sony DVP-CX995V gets a fair number of user reviews here. One advantage is that while there are fewer reviews, many are much more detailed than those at Amazon.com. User satisfaction is similar. Several customers don't like the autoplay feature, and others say the player erased DVD data they'd painstakingly entered.
