March 2009. Experts and user reviews generally give the Sony DVP-NC800H/B five-disc DVD changer good grades; this is one of the few carousel players on the market. Video quality is judged to be very good, and the DVD player can upconvert images to 1080p via HDMI (provided it's hooked up to an HDTV). This DVD player includes technology to play of discs with defects such as scratches, which can stymie other players. Although it can't work miracles on severely damaged discs, reports say it is effective. Usability is generally good, but some frustrations are voiced. Those include long loading times, the lack of auto shutoff after playing just one disc, and a shuffle function that's incapable of spanning multiple discs. If five discs are not enough, Sony also offers the DVP-CX995V DVD changer (*est. $275), which holds an impressive 400 discs. However, user and professional reviews are mixed.

The best professional review of the Sony DVP-NC800H/B is by Consumer Reports, which includes the five-disc DVD changer among the 11 models covered in its most current update. While testing is above reproach, discussion is very limited, and the results and ratings are only available to paid subscribers. User reviews can be read at Amazon.com, Best Buy.com and Crutchfield.com.

The Sony DVP-NC800H/B generally draws a thumbs-up here, though feedback is not extensive. Some complaints are noted -- like an inadequate shuffle-play feature -- but most seem to be pleased. The silver version of the player (Sony DVP-NC800H/S) gets a few reviews here as well. The overall rating is similar, but a few more unhappy users can be found.
