DVD Recorders: Ratings of Sources

DVD Recorders

Our Assessment

Right now, Consumer Reports is the most comprehensive source of professional DVD recorder reviews, though additional updates appear to be badly needed. In the most recent round of testing, editors rate 24 DVD recorders on ease of use, recording time and more, providing information about compatibility with various DVD formats. A number of the tested DVD recorders have been either discontinued or supplanted by upgraded recorders, although most are similar enough to the newer versions that the discussion is still relevant.

DVD Recorders
by Editors of CNet.com
Our Assessment Though CNet.com once stood as the best source for DVD recorder ratings, the site has reviewed only one current DVD recorder, the Panasonic DMR-EA18K. As it happens, the DMR-EA18K is also the highest-rated DVD recorder so far, winning points from experts for its outstanding image quality and appealing feature set.

How to Buy a DVD Recorder
by Editors of PC World
Our Assessment While this article does not make specific recommendations about which DVD recorders are best, it does provide practical and useful guidance on what to look for when shopping for the right model. There's also a discussion of the relative importance of different specifications and features, as well as a listing of things to consider before making your final selection.

Our Assessment

AVS Forum is one of the better user-to-user home entertainment and technology discussion sites on the Internet. Within the site's DVD Recorders forum, you can find user reports, reviews, discussions of features and flaws and more. And while most of the opinions posted are not from professional reviewers, this currently is one of the better places to learn about how the new generation of DVD recorders with digital tuners is shaping up.

DVD Recorders

Our Assessment

This website lets users rate and comment on DVD recorders they own. While the quality of the feedback is variable, there are a lot of fairly sophisticated and knowledgeable contributors as well, and some of the comments provide details -- like how to work around issues or add features -- that are hard to find anywhere else. While many current models are included, there are hundreds of long-discontinued models and models not sold in the U.S. listed as well.

DVD Recorders

Our Assessment Like Circuit City, Amazon.com provides users with a platform to let others know how pleased they are with their DVD recorder selection. The listing of DVD recorders contains some non-recording devices as well as discontinued products. Both of these factors make navigation tedious, unless you know exactly what you are looking for.

DVD Players & Recorders
by Contributors to BestBuy.com
Our Assessment

Best Buy is another electronics retailer that allows consumers to post reviews of products they buy. Like Amazon.com, you can see ratings -- and the number of reviews -- from the main landing pages without clicking on individual products. However, most products don't have as many reviews as at those other sites. The clear favorite here currently is the inexpensive Toshiba D-R410, which owners praise primarily for its overall value.

DVD Players/Recorders
by Editors of and contributors to TestFreaks.com
Our Assessment

Literally hundreds of products are listed here, complete with numeric ratings, compiled expert and user reviews, and scaled scores in such categories as value and features. While this compilation of reviews from so many sources and so many angles represents an informational gold mine for shoppers, the product category doesn't discriminate between DVD players and DVD recorders, nor are most of the units clearly labeled as either players or recorders on the main page. The unfortunate result is that shoppers interested only in DVD recorders must wade through hundreds of irrelevant listings to find the products that they'd like to research.

DVD Recorder Reviews
by Editors of eCoustics.com
Our Assessment eCoustics.com also compiles expert and user reviews from other sources. Lots of expert reviews are listed, but many are for discontinued models. No one product has amassed more than a handful of consumer reviews.

DVD Recorders
by Contributors to Epinions
Our Assessment Owners posting to Epinions offer some insight into various products' performance. Like Amazon.com, Epinions lists lots of discontinued models, so it's better to visit once you've got your choice narrowed to a few models.

Top DVD Recorders
by Robert Silva
Our Assessment

About.com's Home Theater Guide lists what he considers to be the top eight DVD recorders. Unfortunately, the recommendations seem to be based on manufacturer reputations, specifications and feature lists, with no indication that the author has actually tested -- or even seen -- these units. At least half the DVD recorders included are discontinued. (Note that About.com and ConsumerSearch are owned by the same parent company, but are not affiliated editorially.)

DVD Recorders
by Editors of Reviewcentre.com
Our Assessment

This U.K.-based site may be more difficult for North American shoppers to navigate, as many of the model numbers are specific to DVD recorders that are either discontinued or only widely available overseas. Ratings cover aspects of performance and value for several familiar DVD recorders. Most reviews are short and lack a lot of detail, but a few more professional, in-depth reviews are scattered throughout.

by Editors of Which.co.uk
Our Assessment Which? Online is a British consumer magazine and website that offers product reports for paid subscribers. If you're looking for a DVD recorder to use in Europe, this is a worthwhile stop. Model numbers don't correspond to U.S. models, but DVD recorders from Sony and Panasonic dominate the list of Best Buys.

DVD Recorders Reviews and Prices
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our Assessment While Consumer Guide has taken a turn for the better of late, it's not currently a worthwhile stop for DVD recorder reviews as none of the ones listed on the site are current models.
