The Toshiba DVR670 isn't perfect, but reports say that it comes closer to delivering the ideal blend of performance and value than any other DVD/VHS recorder combo available. More than a few are mystified by the DVR670's complicated procedures and dense owner's manual, though it does much better than competing recorders, such as the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK (*Est. $275) in that regard. Some expert reviews do give the Panasonic DVD recorder a lead in terms of picture quality, especially at slower recording speeds, but users for the most part are pleased with the picture quality of the DVR670. Some reports of an inaccurate clock have surfaced, but a fix for that is available. If you don't need the ability to play back or record VHS tapes, the Toshiba DR570 (*Est. $160) has otherwise-similar features and is notably cheaper. The Magnavox MDR515H/F7 (*Est. $250) is a little more expensive and lacks VCR capabilities, but it has a built-in hard drive and is much easier to use.
Few professionals have reported on the Toshiba DVR670, but a brief report can be found at Bestcovery.com. Users, on the other hand, provide lots of opinions. Amazon.com is the best place to read those, and more input can be found at JR.com and ABT.com.

1. Amazon.com
More than 175 owners have posted user reviews of the Toshiba DVR670 at Amazon.com. The overall rating is only so-so at 3.6 out of 5 stars, but more users are pleased than displeased. Unhappy owners find the player challenging to use and the instruction manual to be little help -- and even some happy ones echo similar concerns. Still, many say that the Toshiba DVR670 delivers what it promises and works well.

2. JR.com
There are fewer owner reviews here than at Amazon.com, but satisfaction is a tad higher at 4 out of 5 stars overall. Most owners are complimentary toward the Toshiba DVR670, but a few report problems. One says the picture is great, but that the features -- including an inability to record cable channels above 99 -- are dated.

3. ABT.com
Praise for the Toshiba DVR670 is on a par with that at Amazon.com. Most of the more than 40 owner-reviewers seem reasonably happy. Though a few new problems crop up in the comments, most of the gripes have to do with how challenging the DVR670 can be to master.

This is the only professional review we found of the Toshiba DVR670. Unfortunately, it is brief and largely uninformative. That said, the DVR670 earns a fourth-place rating on a list of digital video recorders, finishing behind only two TiVo DVRs (both now discontinued) and a DVR recorder with a hard drive that, though discontinued, is similar to the Magnavox H2160MW9.
