Most reviewers agree that the 2008 Saturn Astra hatchback, which replaces the entry-level Ion in Saturn's lineup, is a worthy (but not outstanding) competitor. The Astra is a Belgian import: GM's German subsidiary, Opel, has marketed the Astra quite successfully in Europe since 2004. Critics say Opel's styling cues are likely to prove a strength for the Saturn Astra, as will the manufacturer's influence on build quality and driving dynamics. The 2008 Saturn Astra performs reasonably well in most reviews, and most sources expect it to compete well with sportier hatchbacks like the Mazda3 (*est. $13,995 to $20,295) and Volkswagen Rabbit (*est. $15,600 to $18,650). The 2008 Astra is available in two-door and four-door versions; some reviewers anticipate the probable addition of a high-performance variant.

Considering that the Saturn Astra is new for 2008, there's not much comparative review coverage. Useful, credible evaluations are available from sources such as Consumer Reports magazine and ConsumerGuide.com, however. Both agencies conduct comprehensive road tests and use the results to illustrate how the Astra measures up to its peers. Car and Driver also publishes a feature detailing the new Saturn Astra's performance in a head-to-head test that includes seven other compact cars. Informative single-vehicle reviews covering road tests are available from Edmunds.com, Road & Track magazine, and parent-oriented automotive review site MotherProof.com, though each of these reviews focus on somewhat-divergent aspects of utility and performance.
