While the sportier WRX and WRX STi models are reviewed most often, much of the commentary applies to all iterations of the compact 2008 Subaru Impreza. Strong points are all-wheel drive, standard anti-lock brakes and curtain-side air bags (plus traction control in most models), as well as good crash test ratings and Subaru's impressive track record. Many reviewers say the restyled Impreza still offers some zip while presenting a more mature image; opinions are mixed regarding whether this is something to be celebrated. The Subaru Impreza faces some stiff competition, as reviewers like both the Honda Civic (*est. $14,800 to $23,250) and the Mazda3 (*est. $13,995 to $20,295). Neither of those cars offers all-wheel drive, however.
A major restyle for 2008 thrusts the Subaru Impreza squarely into the spotlight. Motor Trend's Car of the Year article is based on extensive road testing and analysis, so it is one of the better reviews. Consumer Reports magazine has also tested the 2008 Impreza and evaluates it in comparison with past year's models as well as with many other small cars. Product testers at ConsumerGuide.com provide analysis that shows how the Impreza ranks against the compact-car segment as a whole. The WRX version of the Subaru Impreza appears on lists of 2008's best new cars at About.com and Cars.com. Editors at Edmunds.com offer a helpful summary of their single-car evaluation of this model. The Car Family evaluates the Impreza on its family functionality.
