As of the 2008 model year, the Volkswagen New Beetle coupe and convertible are still in their first generation, despite small annual changes. The 2008 New Beetle isn't included in any major comparison tests, probably because the newer subcompact hatchbacks are grabbing more headlines. Editors at ConsumerGuide.com evaluate the 2008 Volkswagen New Beetle and assign ratings that are compared with a class average; readers can also use those scores to compare the Beetle directly with another rival. Consumer Reports magazine also reports on various aspects of the Beetle's performance. Edmunds.com publishes a nicely balanced review of the 2008 VW New Beetle, and Cars.com road-tests this model. CarCritic.com offers a brief critical assessment for a fee.
The two-door Volkswagen New Beetle made a big splash when it was introduced more than a decade ago, but reviewers say it now seems a little outdated. Some newer subcompact hatchbacks – including the Honda Fit (*est. $13,950 to $16,070) and Toyota Yaris (*est. $11,350 to $14,450) – get better reviews for rear-seat comfort, cargo space, dependability and fuel efficiency and are significantly less expensive, too. Still, test drivers say that front-seat comfort in the New Beetle is exceptional, and that the ride is smooth and pleasant. Above all, no car looks as distinctive. Most reviewers appreciate the availability of a convertible version. Many point out that the 2008 Volkswagen New Beetle handles well but isn't a sporty performer. Standard features are generous, and the resale value is typically very good.
