March 2009. Reviewers say the 2009 Toyota Yaris feels solid and rides smoothly for such a small car. Seat comfort gets mixed reviews, with some critics unhappy with the flat, unsupportive cushion and high, perch-like driving position. Almost all reviewers dislike the gauge cluster mounted in the center of the Yaris' dashboard instead of in front of the driver. They say it diverts attention too far from the road ahead while driving. While the petite dimensions of the Toyota Yaris help give it remarkable maneuverability, critics say the small car's steering feel is too numb (a recurring Toyota complaint -- the Corolla gets similar criticism) and it handles too softly. They also say acceleration is acceptable with the manual gearbox, but is too sluggish on Toyota Yaris models equipped with the optional automatic transmission. Reliability history for the Toyota Yaris is excellent, but crash-test scores are below average. For buyers seeking simple transportation, reviewers say the Toyota Yaris fits the bill, with six airbags and standard antilock brakes. While its base price is reasonable, many reviews say the Toyota Yaris seems too much like a basic economy car, while some competitors offer more standard equipment and a more engaging driving experience.

The Toyota Yaris subcompact comes in three body styles: a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan and new five-door hatchback to compete with the popular Honda Fit (*est. $14,750 to $16,260). Reviewers give the Honda better ratings and say it's both roomier and more enjoyable to drive. The Toyota Yaris gets praise for its outstanding fuel-economy ratings of 29 mpg city and 35-36 mpg highway, and test vehicles average at least 30 mpg in real-life mixed driving. The sole powerplant in the Toyota Yaris is a 106-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder with five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic. The new five-door is automatic-only. Other recommended alternatives include the larger 2009 Nissan Versa (*est. $9,990 to $16,330) and 2009 Hyundai Accent (*est. $9,970 to $15,070), each with lower prices. For a more upscale look and feel, critics say to look at Toyota's more expensive 2009 Scion xD (*est. $14,650) five-door hatchback, based on the Toyota Yaris platform, but with a more powerful engine.

1. Edmunds.com

Edmunds.com calls the Toyota Yaris "a merely average choice in a continually improving segment." While they praise the Yaris' fuel efficiency, modern style and overall quality, they say there is little else to set it apart. Acceleration with the automatic is "sluggish," and the electric steering is "mostly devoid of feel."

2. ConsumerGuide.com

In this general review, ConsumerGuide.com editors are impressed with the Toyota Yaris' stable, absorbent ride and maneuverability. Some testers report that the car will "wander in gusty crosswinds." Overall, they call it "a relatively refined subcompact," but warn that optional features can raise the price of the Toyota Yaris to the same level of larger, more powerful cars.

This review is a good descriptive summary of the Toyota Yaris based on the writer's own test driving as well as other published reviews. Editor Bengt Halvorson calls the Toyota Yaris a "recession darling, with cheap running costs, a low price, and a reputation for dependability." He says the interior is "a contrast of elements good and bad, desirable and tacky."

5. AutomoBlog

AutomoBlog provides a good description of the Toyota Yaris model line as well as behind-the-wheel driving impressions. Editor Chris Burdick is surprised by the amount of room in the cabin, and he found the two test cars Toyota provided to be enjoyable to drive. Both had automatic transmissions and "could use a little bit more pep," Burdick reports. He also disliked the center-mounted instrument panel.

6. LeftLaneNews.com

This test drive review gives a good summary of how the Toyota Yaris five-door is to drive and its strengths and weaknesses. Writer Mark Elias calls it a "capable city-style car that is at home around town as it is on the highway." The nearly $20,000 sticker price on the test car gives Elias pause, but he finds it enjoyable to drive and adequately roomy.

7. Kelley Blue Book

The 2009 Toyota Yaris earns a KBB Recommended endorsement along with one of the site's Best Resale Value awards. Editors call the Toyota Yaris "a simple, four-cylinder economy model with a whimsical design -- not a sporty performer by any stretch." Reliability and value are strong points.

8. CarGurus.com

CarGurus.com provides a basic recap of information on the Toyota Yaris, but does not perform its own test drive. The writer warns that the Toyota Yaris' standard equipment list is "lean and lacking" to keep the price down.
